Generation: 3

Machine: ZX Spectrum, and many others

Genre: Puzzle

In 1986 one of the most bizarre, in a long line of bizarre, UK children’s TV programmes became one of the most bizarre and brilliant video games of the third generation. It involves you, a big fat blue blob called Berk, answering to the every whim of Him Upstairs, all of whom you see is a pair of angry eyes. Being a servant to a mean pair of eyes doesn't sound like much fun but this slave-sim has bags of appeal and represents a real challenge for even the most experienced gamer. Your job is to explore the limited set of rooms in the cellar and use the objects available to fulfil the requests of Him Upstairs which may be a can of worms or an eyeball crush. All the while your master is getting more and more cross and if you don’t deliver his request in time he’ll boil over.

It’s a short but tough little gem and the puzzles are ingenious, today’s designers could learn a thing or two from this one.
